Utilities

Notice

The City of Fort Lauderdale is preparing to bring the new Prospect Lake Clean Water Center online in fall 2026.  As part of this work, you may notice a temporary change in your water’s color starting Monday, September 8, 2025.  Fort Lauderdale will begin flushing at existing well sites which have a naturally higher organic content, leading to the change.  Your water will continue to be tested regularly to ensure compliance with drinking-water standards.  Fort Lauderdale's City News webpage has additional notification details, as well as information on the Prospect Lake Clean Water Center project.

Functions

The Emergency Management/Utilities Department provides the city with a variety of utility services including management of the city’s water system, wastewater (sewer) system, street maintenance, traffic calming devices, stormwater management and flood control, and the administration of outsourced services such as garbage, recycling and bulk trash collection and engineering.

The Department’s services and programs protect the safety and welfare of the public, balance community goals or livability and economic vitality, and fulfill local, state, and federal mandates. The Emergency Management/Utilities Department will continue to meet these challenges by investing in our city’s future.
